Individuals have been encouraged to consider cutting their energy costs as quickly as possible in order to be prepared for the winter months.

Energy manager at moneysupermarket.com Scott Byrom said many UK homeowners are experiencing 'fuel poverty' without even realising it.

"We firmly believe there is a desperate need for the UK to become more energy efficient and cutting household bills is a key part of this," he explained.

His comments followed research by the organisation that found only one-fifth of the people polled understood what fuel poverty means.

The term - which is used for those who spend more than ten per cent of their income on energy bills - was not recognised by 15 per cent of respondents, while 41 per cent thought it meant struggling with power costs in general.

Peter Jenkins, spokesperson for the Home Heat Helpline, recently stated saving money on fuel bills does not seem to be a priority for the general public, despite it being a concern for one-third of people.
